Winter roadside advice

Slid off the road in Sanilac County? Here's what to do.

Thumb Towing · Sandusky, Michigan

Lake Huron wind, open farm fields and long stretches between towns make Thumb roads tricky once the snow starts. If you slide off the road, first check for injuries and immediate danger. Call 911 if emergency assistance is needed, and follow emergency responders’ instructions.

1. Stay in the vehicle if it's safe

Turn on your hazard lights. If the vehicle is safely away from traffic and there is no fire or other immediate danger, staying inside may provide shelter. Do not step into moving traffic. If you are unsure what is safe, call emergency services and follow their directions.

2. Be cautious with engine heat

A blocked exhaust can allow deadly carbon monoxide to build up. Do not run the engine if the tailpipe is blocked or you cannot check it safely. Keep the exhaust clear and use the engine only briefly for heat when conditions allow; slightly open a window. Seek emergency help if you feel unwell.

3. Know where you are

Note the nearest crossroad, mile marker or address. "M-46 just east of Sandusky" gets a truck to you much faster than "somewhere on the highway."

4. Don't spin your way deeper

Avoid repeatedly spinning the tires or attempting recovery from an unsafe position. Describe the vehicle and its position when you call so the appropriate assistance can be discussed.

5. Pack a winter kit now

  • Blanket, hat and gloves
  • Phone charger
  • Small shovel and kitty litter or sand
  • Flashlight and snacks

When to call a tow vs. a winch-out

A recovery and a tow are different jobs. Describe the position and condition of the vehicle when you call. If it is damaged, leaking fluid or not drivable, do not assume it is safe to drive once it is back on the road. Discuss the recovery method and destination with the operator.
